Sept 17 Our last day in Nafplio and Greece. Headed home tomorrow. I was up at 6:30 again after a restless night and difficulty falling asleep with random phone calls coming in through the night. David was snoring as well and I finally headed to the bedroom upstairs where the bed was so hard. But I got a decent night of sleep. Woke the guys up at 7:30 as we wanted to get out to do our hike up the mountain to Palazzo Palimidi before it got too hot. Stopped for a latte and headed up the hill. The morning was so beautiful. Not a breath of wind and the temperature was lovely. The 1000 steps didn't seem too daunting and the views were breathtaking! The Palimidi has been used by soldiers throughout the centuries to gain control of Nafplio. Not as old as much of the ruins in Greece, it was built in the 1700's. But it was an incredible place. Of course, we had to pay to enter. Almost all the archaeological sites in Greece charge entrance fees. I'm sure we've spent hundreds of d...
Sept 16 Another typical short night for me. Last one to fall asleep and first one to get up. I've been sleeping about 6.5 hours a night but feel really good for the most part. I folded all the laundry and showered. David got up about the time I was finished. We soaked his foot one more time and put more abx cream on it and headed out for coffee. Of course, sitting in Nafplio having coffee is pretty wonderful. The temperature is perfect and the coffee is wonderful. Nafplio is definitely my favorite place we have visited. I love this town. It was about 11:00 when we returned to the apartment and Avi was still sleeping! I woke him up and we decided to begin our day. We had thought about doing the Palimidi hike but decided to wait until the next morning. It would be cooler to do the 1000 steps to the top and David's foot would have another day to heal. David really wanted to see the country side so we decided to go visit the Epidaurus Theater. Breakfast first of course. I didn...
Sept 15 Got up at 5:15 this morning and showered again because my hair was standing straight up and there was no easier way to get it done. Woke the guys up about 5:40 and we were all out the door by 6 am. Stopped for diesel for our rental car and headed for the airport. Very small airport and very clean. We were told to arrive 2.5 hours early but it was unnecessary. We got through security quickly and had an hour and a half to chill. Bought coffees and just relaxed. Safely arrived in Nafplio and got our rental car, also very easily. The trip to Nafplio is a couple of hours, about 170 km. But no traffic at all and it was a beautiful drive. Had to pay toll four times along the way. Our host told us his mother would meet us in Cafe Prego to show us where to park when we got here. We immediately found ourselves in one of those narrow alleyways that had a dead end and David had to back the car up for a ridiculous length and I honestly cannot believe the things this man can do with a c...
Sept 14 Today is our last day in Santorini and the plan is to hike from Fira to Oia. Got up more leisurely today and headed to Fira to begin our adventure. Found a parking spot easily and headed to the trail. We hiked 20-30 minutes and then stopped for coffee and breakfast at a little cafe along the trail. Food was good. Coffee not that great. My stomach was really unsettled but I managed to basically ignore it as we went along our way. Our next stop was Imerovigli. We took a detour at that point to Skaros Rock. We had read that there was cliff jumping in this location but we never were able to find it and it looked like anyone jumping in this area was anxious to end their life. As we hiked down the hill to begin the hike up to Skaros Rock and the church at the end of the path, sewer was running alongside us on the trail. Quite the experience. We know you aren't supposed to flush toilet paper in the toilets in Greece. They have signs everywhere. Apparently the plumbing in Greece i...
Sept 13 Decided to have an easier day today. Felt like we hadn't really slowed down much at all. Everyone took their time getting up and then we headed into Kamari for breakfast. Ate at another lovely restaurant on the Kamari beach and had delicious Greek yogurt with fresh fruit, bread and of course tomatoes and cucumbers. Latte on the side! Delicious. After breakfast, we headed for a different beach that was supposed to be a bit sandier. and Perissa was the choice. It was about a 30 minute drive from Kamari. Found an easy parking spot - feels like most of the tourists went home. To sit on a lounge chair by the water, we had to be patrons of a restaurant where we committed to spending at least 20 euros. Found a place and settled in. It was quite windy and I wasn't really feeling like swimming so I sat in the lounge chair and read a book while Avi and David swam. First time Avi has swam for 30 minutes. He is feeling good in the water. After swimming, we ate again! Because we ha...
Sept 12 Somehow managed to have a decent night sleep on our cement slab. When the alarm went off at 7:15, my body thought it was the middle of the night and I had a hard time waking up. Got the guys up and we threw our stuff into the shopping bag we bought yesterday to carry our stuff and headed out the door. We were walking to the Crazy Donkey Brewing Company where the bus was picking us up for our excursion. It took us about an hour to get to the port after picking up other passengers. The bus navigated those sharp hairpin turns down to the port. It made you feel a little sick but this guy knew what he was doing. David was laughing and saying he was a Jedi Warrior.  It was a beautiful day with a gentle breeze and the boat was beautiful. We went through the required Covid paperwork and then got on board. Our first stop was the Nea Kameni volcano for a hike. What a unique islet. It is an active volcano with its oldest rock formation 430 years ago and its newest, a mere 50 yea...
Sept 11 We left Naxos this morning. More civilized time for this ferry and it was a shorter ride. Went uneventfully. Wow. Arriving in Santorini was a crazy people fest. People everywhere. Boarding buses. Looking for taxis. Such a different sight and feel than Naxos. Our rental car was delivered to the port and we finally found the guy holding the sign with our name. Got in our diesel Volkswagen and started our crazy drive out of the port. The road from the port to the top of the caldera where the city lies is so steep with hairpin turns. Crazy driving out of there. Our host had sent us specific directions to our Airbnb but we couldn't find it and ended up driving all over the place until we finally googled the Art Space Winery which is close to our apartment. Finally arrived here. Dropped off our bags and headed into Kamari to get some lunch. Kamari beach is lined with restaurants and it has much more of a tourist vibe. We ate chicken gyros and salads and the food was good and ver...
