Sept 16
Another typical short night for me. Last one to fall asleep and first one to get up. I've been sleeping about 6.5 hours a night but feel really good for the most part. I folded all the laundry and showered. David got up about the time I was finished. We soaked his foot one more time and put more abx cream on it and headed out for coffee. Of course, sitting in Nafplio having coffee is pretty wonderful. The temperature is perfect and the coffee is wonderful. Nafplio is definitely my favorite place we have visited. I love this town. It was about 11:00 when we returned to the apartment and Avi was still sleeping! I woke him up and we decided to begin our day. We had thought about doing the Palimidi hike but decided to wait until the next morning. It would be cooler to do the 1000 steps to the top and David's foot would have another day to heal. David really wanted to see the country side so we decided to go visit the Epidaurus Theater. Breakfast first of course. I didn't do well on my ordering today. Eggs Benedict and Avocado salad, neither of which I could eat. Just too weird. Avi and David had all kinds of food, salad, smoothie, yogurt, donuts, etc. etc. The amount of food these guys can eat astounds me and I'm never able to finish anything. I did ok with the bread and coffee and that about did it for me today.
The countryside was beautiful and the area where the Theater was located was very green, unlike much of the other area we've seen. The Theater was built in about 320 BC and is considered to be the finest and most well preserved example of a Greek Theater. It has rows and rows of seats, sits about 15,000 people and is still used today for concerts and plays. There is a spot in the center of the stage where you can stand and be heard throughout the Theater without a microphone. Very cool.
After visiting Epidaurus, we drove to Tolo Beach. This was a beautiful sandy beach but the wind was blowing, common theme here in Greece, and the water was rough. There were very few people here but we had to pay 10 Euros to sit in a lounge chair. I got a chance to change clothes in a Greek changing room. Four plywood walls and a sand floor, tiny and you could barely move, but I got in my swimsuit. I loved the water because body surfing was super fun here. Avi wasn't sure about it. He really wanted to swim and it was just too rough. We spent some time here and then headed back to Nafplio.
We parked our car by the port and walked over to Arvanitia Beach. We wanted to walk on the promenade which was a paved trail that wound around the cliffside that jutted out into the sea. The path was not well maintained but it was still exquisitely beautiful. We walked all the way around the point and then found a restaurant to eat dinner and watch the sunset. Avi and I ordered pizza and David ordered savory pancakes, something that is common here. It was WAY too much food and we ended up not being able to eat even half of our food. The servings of food in Nafplio are absolutely huge. The sunset was beautiful. What a lovely spot.
Walked back to our room started the laborious process of negative Covid testing with a video proctor for our trip home. Finally got all the tests done and the other mountains of paperwork - took a couple hours. What a deal. But still worth it.
